Zion I and Sol at Winstons in Ocean Beach San Diego

January 23, 2014

Zion I and Sol are playing at Winstons in Ocean Beach San Diego this Friday January 24th.  I would be at this show in a heartbeat but I booked airfare to fly to Portland this weekend.  Winstons is walking distance from my apartment so I am really bummed.

I have seen these guys 12+ times in 3 different states and I highly recommend you check them out this Friday.  I have a feeling that they will kill it in this intimate venue.

Zion I just released an EP called The Masters if Ceremony which you can buy/download here: http://zionicrew.bandcamp.com/album/the-masters-of-ceremony-ep

If you make it to the show, leave a comment and let me know what you thought.

Soundset Wrap Up

June 11, 2013

The Nugato EntranceSoundset festival happened over Memorial Day weekend this year (2013).  The festival was held at Cantebury Downs in Shakopee MN as it has been for the past few years.  This year I went with all of my cousins and a few friends.  We had a large crew going again this year and we had a good time.  There were 28,000 people in attendance.  It felt like it was the busiest Soundset that I have been to.

The weather was overcast but at least it didn't rain.  We didn't arrive to the show until 3:00pm and it was unfortunate because we missed POS.  I am still a little baffled as to why they were on so early...seems like he would get a later time slot since he is from MN and everyone loves his live show.  The Marijuana Deathsquads played live for POS.  My friend Isaac Gale is in MJD and was on stage with POS providing some electronic effects.  I had a chance to catch up with him after their performance which I really enjoyed.

When we arrived, Brother Ali was on stage performing.  I have seen him a few times and really enjoy his live show.  The sound was not the best and we were in the way back of the crowd so I can't really give a review.

Soundset CrowdYou can see Brother Ali on the video board in the photo on the left.  They had the two main stages next to each other and would alternate the performances between stages to help with the setup times.  There was also a secod stage since there were so many acts.  I didn't venture over there too often since most of the artsits I wanted to see were on the main stages.

After Brother Ali, Busta Rhymes was supposed to come on stage.  For some reason, he decided not to show up.  I just read that he was supposedly in Vegas.  Since Busta didn't show, Prof came on stage to fill his time slot.  I felt bad that he had to come out to a dissappointed crowd, but he held his own and put on a good show.

We saw Tech N9ne who I really enjoy seeing live, Mac Miller, Atmosphere and Snoop.  I thought Atmosphere played a good set and the crowd enjoyed it.  We left before Snoop's set was done because we were ready to leave.

I will put a few links to other reviews and also some videos from the show on youtube so you can get a better feel for what went down.  Can't wait til next year!

Zion I, The Grouch and Eligh at the Velements Fesitval

May 8, 2013

In April, I went to see Zion I, The Grouch and Eligh at the Velements festival in San Diego, which had yoga classes in the morning and afternoon and 10 groups playing from 5pm til 11pm.  As you can tell from my pictures, I'm not a yogi so I just bought tickets for the music portion of the event.  I had a couple friends, Pete and Koom (BIG Zion I fans), visiting me from Minnesota at the time. In the picture on the left, from left to right you'll see Jude, Mike, myself, Zumbi (the MC for Zion I), Koom, and Pete.  All of these guys have gone to a ton of shows with me and also helped out with the website.

I had seen Zion I and G&E two years ago at How the Grouch Stole Christmas.  Although I wasn't that impressed that first time it may have been due to the fact that I was not that familiar with The Grouch and Eligh at the time.  I really didn't know what to expect...

This time, however, the show was awesome. We arrived at the festival right as Zion I and G&E were coming on stage. Although we missed the opening acts, we were really there to see Zion I and G&E so we weren't too upset.

All of the groups we saw had great energy on stage and even though the crowd was pretty diverse in interests (given it was a yoga/electronic/beach rock/hip hop event) everyone seemed to enjoy the show.  I loved how the groups alternated performing songs and since there is a lot of collaboration between these guys, they were also able to perform songs together which was really sweet!  Below is a video of Digital Dirt off the record Heroes in the City of Dope. Here is the link to the youtube playlist with all the videos I took

Paid Dues Festival 2013 Wrap Up

May 8, 2013

Paid Dues 2013 StageI attended the Paid Dues festival this year in San Bernadino, CA, which was held at the San Manueal Ampitheater. This venue, which sits in the hills of Glen Helen Regional Park and makes for some pretty awesome scenery, was an improvement over the NOS Center where it's been held in previous years. I just wish the venue was closer to the lodging in San Bernadino, as we had to pay for a $40 taxi each way to and from the show. The other BIG issue I had was that due to the fact the venue made only 4 windows for will call, I had to wait an hour and a half in line to get my tickets and missed the Grieves set. Next year I will order my tickets in advance and have them shipped to me so I dont' have to wait in line.

Paid Dues Monster Energy StageThe first act that we were able to see was De La Soul, which I was excited for because I had not seen them since Coachella in 2009 and they put on a great show. Their performance at Paid Dues 2013 was equally as good, performing hit after hit on the main stage. The crowd was having a great time during their entire set, and although we were unable to get down to the standing area, I didn't mind sitting in a chair that I posted up not too far from the stage. Talib Kweli played after De La on the main stage, but I wanted to rush over to catch the end of Binary Star's set on the Dues Paid stage as I had missed their performance at previous shows. We caught their last two songs before having to run back over to the main stage for Talib.  The distance between the main stage and the other two probably takes around 10 mins to cover with all the foot traffic, which I will be sure to keep in mind next year.

Paid Dues Tech N9neI wasn't the biggest fan of Tech N9ne, but my cousin Cody from Kansas City absolutely loves him so I made sure to catch his set, which he murdered. The crowd was feeling it, his choreographed moves on stage were great, the light show was fantastic, and his music was rockin! I can't wait to see him again this memorial day at the Soundset Festival in MN.

Other artists that I really enjoyed were Immortal Technique, Mobb Deep, Scarface, Souls of Mischief and Mackelmore and Ryan Lewis.

I was bummed that I was unable to see Grieves, Prof, Murs and Fashawn and Grouch and Eli.

I also wish I would have stuck around for Black Hippy.  After having a long day at the show, we ended up leaving part way through Mackelmore even though the whole festival was getting wild during their set.

Welcome to Nugato

April 24, 2013

gift of gab nugato

Welcome to Nugato! It was after first hearing Blackalicious' Blazing Arrow in 2002 that I became been a fan of underground hip-hop. And that love continued to grow, aided by having the Minneapolis-based Rhymesayers label nearby, which allowed me to learn about and experience their roster of artists, such as Atmosphere. I have wanted to get this site up and running since 2007, but I have always procrastinated and never took the time to get it done until now.

My goal is to provide you - underground hip hop fans - a one stop shop to keep track of your favorite artists and learn about others from our community. Having spent many hours going from label web page to label web page looking for any announcements for tours, albums, news, etc. I want to provide an easier way to get this done. After signing up for the site, you can come back, login, and browse and follow artists. You will receive an email notifying you if any artist you follow tours in your city or puts out a new album. The site has links to the artist's homepage, blog, Twitter account, and Facebook account. You can also find links to purchase the albums directly from iTunes and Amazon.

There have been many people that I need to thank for helping out with the site. Brian E for the design, Peter A for helping me get the front end of this site moving along, Corey C for the domain name, Kelly G for putting up with me, my MN crew and my OB crew for going to shows, getting me t-shirts, coozies, and stickers to promote the site, and all the artists for putting out great music and taking pictures with me.
